Crown Towers Macau now to be called ‘Nüwa’ from Jan 18 2018

Crown Tower Macau

One of the hotels at City of Dreams Macau, an integrated resort operated by Hong Kong businessman Lawrence Ho’s Melco Resorts & Entertainment, will be rebranded this month. Crown Towers will begin operating as Nüwa from January 18, 2018. In Chinese mythology, Nüwa is known to be the creator of human kind and the mender of the sky.

The rebranding of Crown Towers comes several months after Melco Resorts & Entertainment completed its rebranding. The hotel and casino operator changed its name from Melco Crown, after it parted ways with its former Australian partner, Crown Resorts.

The Australian operator decided to leave Macau’s gambling and hospitality scene after the October 2016 detention of 19 staff members in China. Its employees were arrested for allegedly promoting gambling service on the Mainland, an activity that is prohibited by Chinese law.

Three of the detained individuals were released shortly after, but 16 of them, including Crown’s Head of VIP Operations Jason O’Connor, remained detained awaiting to be sentenced. They were eventually released this past August.

The arrests hit Crown’s domestic VIP business significantly. As a result, the company announced earlier this year that it would dispose of its international assets to better focus on its Australian operations and hopefully revitalize its business as quickly as possible.

Melco Resorts and Entertainment’s Expansion Plan

Following the legalization of casino gambling in Japan, Melco announced that it was interested in entering the new casino market. Mr. Ho has pledged that his company will develop a unique resort, if it wins one of Japan’s casino licenses.

The country is yet to introduce and vote on a bill that will set out the necessary regulations under which its casino industry will be managed. It is believed that this will happen sometime in the first half of 2018. And if the necessary legalization is adopted within that timeframe, the Japanese government will then have to select the preferred operators that will develop the nation’s first hotel and casino resorts.

Melco is facing competition from some of the world’s largest casino developers and operators, including Las Vegas giants MGM Resorts International and Las Vegas Sands, and Florida-based Hard Rock International. All the companies that have already expressed interest in the newly created opportunities in Japan, have further pointed out that they are ready to develop unique concepts and to invest billions of dollars into materializing these, when the market is opened officially.

Apart from Macau, Melco also operates an integrated resort in the growing Philippine casino market. The company opened its City of Dreams Manila complex in late 2014.

In April 2017 the promoter of City of Dreams Macau said that another accommodation facility at the property – the then Hard Rock Hotel – would be operated under the name ‘The Countdown’ from “July 2017 until March 31, 2018″ and would get a new branding after that time.

A new hotel tower for City of Dreams Macau – the US$1-billion Morpheus – is due to open in the first half of 2018. The new hotel will feature approximately 780 hotel rooms, suites and villas.
